Countertenor Norman Wakefield has served as Director of Music at Our Lady of the Mountain since 2011. He has performed nationally and internationally as a chamber and choral musician and in opera and oratorio. He regularly performs locally with the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra as a soloist and choir member, in addition to serving on their board of directors.
Norman has sung at the William Byrd Festival, under the direction of the late Dr. Richard Marlow of Trinity College, Cambridge, with renowned choir Cantores in Ecclesia. He appears on the premier English recording of works by Estonian Composer Veloj Tormis, On American Shores, with the internationally acclaimed Portland State University Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Browne.
As a member of the Church Music Association of America, Norman has received advanced trainings and studies at the CMAA’s, Sacred Music Colloquium. This included training in the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms of the Roman rite. He is also familiar with the Dominican Rite liturgy and the liturgies of the Byzantine, Coptic and Syriac Churches. He has received additional training in Roman liturgical music and history from Deacon Dr. Edward Schaeffer.
In addition to performing, directing and coaching he has taught at Portland State University, College of the Redwoods and Rogue Community College. He lives in Phoenix with his wife Jessica and their children Fraser and Cecilia.
