This is Fr. Brent, your new priest and administrator. In this first letter, I’d like to briefly introduce myself and tell you how happy I am to be with you at Our Lady of the Mountain Parish in Ashland.
I grew up in Applegate, went to Hidden Valley High School, and then Oregon State University, where I originally studied in the hopes of going into veterinary medicine. That didn’t work out so I switched gears and went into fisheries and wildlife. I worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Coos Bay and Central Point for thirteen years. It was during those years of working outside in the beauty of God’s creation, that God began to work on my heart. First he called me to become a Catholic; I entered the Church in 2009 at Sacred Heart Parish in Medford.
Then God called me to be a priest; more about that in the future. I entered Mount Angel seminary in 2011 and was ordained as a priest two years ago. I just completed my first assignment as the parochial vicar at Saint Cecilia Parish in Beaverton.
As you will hear in the future, a major part of my conversion and call was Our Blessed Mother and the Saints. One future saint who has been very important for me is Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. His feast day is this weekend, on the Fourth of July. You might want to check him out; you’ll be hearing a lot more about him in the future and as you get to know him (and me) you’ll understand why.
I am very grateful to God for having brought me home and I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. Let us keep each other in prayer.
