Today we officially enter Holy Week as we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. We have begun the holiest of all weeks in our liturgical calendar and I hope that we all go through this week mindful of what God has done for us out of His great love for us. Again, let us not take for granted the coming days. Let us instead take extra effort to really get into the spirit of repentance and conversion.
The Gospel that we have for today is the Passion of Jesus Christ. I was reflecting on the word passion – and it can mean two things. When we say Jesus’ Passion, we are referring to the suffering that He endured – His Passion – for our salvation. But the word passion can also mean “enthusiastic love” – that love which drives a person to do things that are not so easy to do because of love. Some refer to it as the “all consuming desire” that can eat up a person. And so we can say that Jesus suffered His Passion because of His passion – His love for God His Father, to whom He is obedient unto death, and love for us whom He wants to save.
This coming week, while we contemplate the suffering Jesus endured for all of us in obedience to His Father, let us be mindful of His Passion for God and for us – let us remember that He loves us; it is all because of love! Each drop of blood that came from the wounds of Jesus was meant to show His love for each of us; let us not waste it. Let us feel His great love for us and let us love Him back. May God’s love for us strengthen us in our own personal sufferings (our own personal passions), so that we may continue to have faith until the end.
May we all have a blessed week.
In Christ, Fr. Maro
