The Gospel that we have for this Sunday shows that the mission of Jesus Christ seems to center on the poor, the prisoners, the blind, and the oppressed. And reading the Gospels, we can see Jesus responding to this mission through his love of sinners, his acts of forgiveness, his compassion to the lowly, the oppressed, and the poor. Indeed, he has brought with him the compassion of God. When he said: “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing,” Jesus reveals his true identity as the anointed one of God – the Messiah. He was telling all the people there present that the time of salvation that God has promised for His people has finally come and He is the presence that fulfills that promise.
Brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ fulfilled the promise of God – the salvation of the peoples of the world – and He continues to fulfill that promise and he continues to do His mission through us, His Church. Through us, Jesus Christ continues to bring glad tidings to the poor, he continues to proclaim liberty to captives, he continues to bring sight to the blind, and he continues to show compassion to the oppressed and lowly.
May we be ever persevering in our part in continuing and in fulfilling the mission that Jesus Christ started.
