The Gospel that we have for this Sunday (July 21st) made me ask the question, “Is there anything more important than serving the Lord?” I think there is. It is none other than the Lord himself. Mary in the Gospel chooses to be with Jesus rather than to busy herself preparing many things for him and for the other guests to eat. The Lord tells Martha that while it is good to prepare food for him, it is better to just be with him. It is, after all, their company that he seeks, not the food that Martha is preparing.
This reminded me of the many things that we do for the Lord that make us forget to be with the Lord. I remember when I was still a seminarian in the Philippines, I used to be in charge of the music during all the liturgical celebrations of the seminary community. Sometimes I got so busy focusing on playing the piano or the organ while leading the seminary choir in singing that I didn’t pay attention to Jesus in the Eucharist anymore. There was even a time when I forgot to receive Jesus in the Eucharist!
Brothers and sisters, sometimes the worst competitor of our love for the Lord is our work for the Lord. Let us take time to just be with the Lord and listen to him. Talk to him before the blessed Sacrament or listen quietly to his word as you read the Scriptures. Our work for the Lord is important, but let us not forget the better part or just being with the Lord.
