The celebration of Mother’s Day is one of the most special days that we celebrate worldwide. All of us have mothers – biological or adoptive. Our mother was our first home as we developed inside her womb. Our mother’s embrace was the first embrace we experienced when we were born. Our mother was our first source or nourishment as we depended on her to feed us. Our mothers truly are life givers – instruments used by God to bring to life His people – a great honor that men can never completely have. To all mothers, for saying “yes” to all of the mothering you have given and are still giving – thank you very much. Words of gratitude and thanksgiving can never fully express the gratitude that I have for my own mother and all the mothers all over the world, but for whatever it is worth… thank you very much.
I can still remember a conversation I had with my mother some years ago. I remember saying, “No words nor actions can ever show how grateful I am for having you as my mother.” She said, “You know it is not necessary for me to hear you say that you are grateful… but if you want to express your gratefulness, be the best parent you can be to the children you will have. That will make me happy.”
As a priest, I do not have biological children but I do have all of you as my spiritual children. As I continue to do my best in my ministry, I always remember those words from my mother and I hope I am making her happy.
To all the mothers in our parish community and all over the world, Happy Mother’s Day!
In Christ, Fr. Maro
