Jesus Christ’s message when He began His public ministry is a call for repentance: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” The repentance Jesus preached was radical – this means a complete about-face – a call to turn away from things that cause sin like pride, laziness, selfishness, self-centeredness and so many other things. He calls the people, not only during those times but also the people of today, to turn away from everything that can lead to sin and begin a new way of life.
Just as the first disciples left everything and immediately followed Jesus, let us leave everything that can lead us to sin, repent from our sins and follow Jesus Christ. Let us allow our Lord’s light to shine on our darkness. St. Andrew encountered that light and in that encounter he experienced conversion – he fell in love with Jesus and felt from Him the power that can only belong to God.
Brothers and sisters, when we turn away from our sins, and the from the things that cause us to sin, there is no doubt in my mind and in my heart that we will truly encounter Jesus. Let us allow that encounter to bring us to conversion and let us pray that we may have the strength to live as his faithful disciples – without asking questions, without having any doubts, and without looking back. Let us do our best to hear Jesus Christ’s call, and let us with all our might, respond. Repent and be in love with Him so that like St. Andrew, we can say: “We have found the Messiah.”
