To all the mothers in our parish community, Happy Mother’s Day!!!
This is a story that I read a few years ago and I would like to share it with all of you on this day, Mother’s Day.
A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and he handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mama dried her hands on her apron, she read it, and this is what it said: For cutting the grass: $5.00. For cleaning my room this week: $1.00. For going to the store for you: .50 cents. For babysitting my brother while you were out with your friends: .25 cents. For taking out the garbage: $1.00. For getting good grades: $5.00. For cleaning up and sweeping the yard: $2.00. Total amount payable: $14.75.
After reading the IOU, his mother smiled as she looked at him. She picked up a pen, turned over the paper the boy had written on, and this is what she wrote: For nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me: No charge. For the sleepless nights I spent after you were born because you needed constant care: No charge. For the nights I sat up with you and prayed for you when you were sick: No charge. For the worries I had for you every time you went out and played sports and stayed out later than you should have: No charge. For wiping your nose, cooking for you, giving you toys and clothes. No charge. When you add it all up, the cost of my love: NO CHARGE.
When the boy finished reading his mother’s note, there were tears in his eyes. He hugged his mother and said, “Can I charge it to dad then?”
For all the things that you do, thank you very much. Your love comes close to the love that God has for all of his people – free of charge. May God continue to bless you.
